Episode 6

Bioinformatics

Fotis Psomopoulos grew up with a childhood full of curiosity about the world, a journey that eventually led him to Bioinformatics—a rapidly evolving field that bridges molecular biology and computer science. Today, he works with massive volumes of genetic data. In recent years, together with his team, he developed a tool to detect coronavirus mutations in wastewater, and he has seen how bioinformatics can also contribute to understanding climate change and biodiversity. He emphasizes the importance of making science open and accessible to the community, while also acknowledging the challenges of communicating a discipline that often remains confined within laboratories. Despite the difficulties of conducting research in Greece, he remains optimistic about the future of the field and encourages young people to pursue it.
